European Talent Point

Introduction

Our institute the Fazekas Street Primary School and Basic Level Art School is an Accredited Excellent Talent Point. It is situated in Miskolc, Hungary with 750 students and 78 teachers.

Since its foundation our institute has done its best for developing talents of music. It started its work in 1963 as a music school. It built its work upon Kodály method and has been continuing it at a very high level since then.

Through the decades we have wided the areas of basic level art education in our school. Therefore we give the chance to our students to use and show their talent on music, dance (folk dance and modern dance), drama and painting faculties.

Our talent supporting community does its work in three different fields of talent: musical, interpersonal and logical-mathematical.

Our main objective is to give our students an effective help for realising and developing their talent. During our work for talent development we use the methods of differentiation and enrichment – speed-up. Another aim is to mediate our local values to the other part of the country while trying to admit and adopt values coming from other areas.

We aim to use the complex personality-forming influence of music teaching. It means that the educational and training work of personal, inward instrumental lessons are complemented by the community-forming power of group and class lessons – they give common results and common musical experiences.

We give the chance to our talented students to show their talent in concerts and different feasts and festivals. With the help of our talent developing workshops we set up children’s operas in the programmes of Bartók Plus Opera Festival.

As a Talent Point we considere musical talent support to be an emphasised task. We organise complex workshops for this activity.

Our Talent Point has developed different types of cooperation with local and national Talent Points. We organised flash mobs, talent days, street art actions. We took part in common trainings with three Talent Points.

We will continue our cooperation with other Talent Points. We aim to organise talent days, common activities. We aspire to prepare our students for national and international competitions.

Our institute believes that it’s important to share the professional knowledge widely. Our objective for the future is to exploit the opportunities of projects

We would like to work on the field of musical talent development. We wish to introduce Kodály method used in our institute and the work of our complex musical talent supporting worksop proved several times. We also would like to give a view of our good practices, to show them to the Talent Points inquiring.

We would like to give a view on our musical talent supporting work and to provide opportunity for exchanging experiences. We aim to share our talent developing programme on a website.

We will make the information needed and the professional materials available on a website. Furthermore we aim to establish a personal professional relationship.

Our talent identifying programme is also in progress.

The school does its talent supporting work in three different fields of talent: musical, interpersonal and logical-mathematical. The areas of basic level art education in our school are: music, dance (folk dance and modern dance), drama and painting.

For this aim we organise complex talent supporting musical workshops, choir meetings, concerts of the students, and competitions as well. We think it is essential to acquire the renewed professional knowledge and ideas. For this reason we organise trainings on nurturing talents. We also take the parents into this work by meetings and personal changing of information.

We give the chance to our talented students to show their talent in concerts and different feasts and festivals. With the help of our talent developing workshop we set up children’s operas in the programmes of Bartók Plus Opera Festival.

In the school-year of 2006/2007 the four art fields working in Fazekas were qualified EXCELLENT by the qualifying corporate body of the Ministry of Education.

The Fazekas Street Primary School and Basic Level Art School is the school of teaching practice of Bartók Béla Institute of Music, University of Miskolc; thus we have the chance to transmit our professional knowledge and to have professional extension courses collaborating with the university.

Since its foundation our institute has marked out for developing talents of music. It started its work in 1963 as a music school. It built its work upon Kodály method and has been continuing it at a very high level since then.

As a Talent Point we considere musical talent support to be an emphasised task. We organised complex workshops for this activity.

Fazekas Talent Supporter Workshop, its talent identifying work, the methods of picking, the methods of talent support:

In the courses of Talent Supporter Workshop the students deal with the musical subjects in a different way from the schol practice. Framing up the programme we aimed to utilize local opportunities given by Miskolc and the near region.

Then we announced the programme among the students. When picking we took into consideration the experiences of the talent development in classes. Besides the individual and group works the children also had a questionnaire. Their competition results were also taken into consideration.

During the workshop activities we put the emphasis on gaining experiences individually.

Our goal is to give a wide range of music cognition and to develop a multifaceted personality.

In the work of Talent Supporter Workshop we have the chance for a complex development of the personality:

  • for developing the strong side of the children (extant musical skills)

  • for developing the weak side (practical activities, performances, culture of communication, organising tasks etc.)

The programme is based on the human resources given in the institute thus it cannot cause a problem in the future either.

The children taking part in the program are the students of our school therefore following them from the root to their extension can be fulfilled. Thus following their professional development is continuous.

In 2003 for our work and results we were rewarded the title „FOR THE HUNGARIAN ART EDUCATION” by the Association of Hungarian Music Schools and Art Schools. The reward was given to our school for our prominent and significant work in the field of artistic education.

In our school there are two choirs, a string-orchestra, a flute-, a saxopnone- and a percussion band so the children have the chance to experience the delight of playing music together.

At the same time it gives opportunity to join the cultural life of our city. In 2012 the Fazekas Children’s Choir was rewarded with the most prestigious cultural prize of the city, the „MÚZSA-DÍJ” (Muse-Prize).

Our most talented students often are prized in national and regional talent spotter competitions.

In our Talent Supporter Workshop there are involved 20 students for individual, and cc. 120 students for choir and orchestra work. We have set up 4 children’s operas performed in the Bartók Plus Opera Festival.

We have to mention our preparatory work for the competitions which is also a priority issue.

The most remarkable results of recent years:

  • International Violin Competition (2013, Galánta) – 4 Gold Prize

  • International Violin Competition (2014, Galánta) – 2 Gold and 1 Silver Prize

  • Internatioanl Violin Festival (2015, Törökszentmiklós) – 1 Silver Prize

  • International Youth Art Competition (2015, Budapest) – Fazekas Guitar Band – Silver Diploma

The Fazekas Children’s choir with its professional work is a uniqe part of the cultural life of the City of Miskolc. At the same time it represents the high quality of Hungarian choir work at natioanal and international scene.

Over the last half century te Fazekas Children’s Choir had several outstanding results:

  • International Choir Competition (2013, Ohrid) – Silver Diploma

  • International Choir Competition (2012, Krakow) – Silver Diploma

One of our main objectives is to use the complex personality-forming influence of music teaching. It means that the educational and training work of personal, inward instrumental lessons are complemented by the community-forming power of group and class lessons – they give common results and common musical experiences.

Past experiences and future plans for cooperation

Our Talent Point has developed different types of cooperation with local and national Talent Points. In the frame of the Month of Talent we organised flash mobs, talent days, street art actions. We took part in common trainings with three Talent Points. Its members were a kindergarten, a talent developing secondary grammar school and different civil society organisations. We also took part in an international EU-project as a consortium partner.

Our institute believes that it’s important to share the professional knowledge widely. A freetime activity project can be a great scene of it.

At the beginning of our work we estimated the number of programmes supporting learning outside the frame of education and being available in our region and area. By this a service activity has been identified which is not solved in the area. Next we estimated the circumstances of the nearby institutes, the motivation of their human recources and the content requriments in their educational Programme. By this we have chosen five institutes; analysing their pedagogical and educational programme, having discussions with the local teachers we have worked out an offer and concluded an agreement with them (a kindergarten, a rural area school, a school with disadvantaged students and an art school). During the preparatory work we had workshops several times.

Our objective for the future is to exploit the opportunities of projects in the frame of MATEHETSZ. With its help we can create work shops. We will continue our cooperation with the Talent Points mentioned above. We aim to organise talent days, common activities. We aspire to prepare our students for national and international competitions.

We would like to give a view on our musical talent supporting work and to provide opportunity for exchanges experiences. We aim to share our talent developing programme on a website.
